1. 🌍 It’s Official: 2018 Was the Fourth-Warmest Year on Record (New York Times)
NASA scientists announced Wednesday that the Earth’s average surface temperature in 2018 was the fourth highest in nearly 140 years of record-keeping and a continuation of an unmistakable warming trend.
"The five warmest years have, in fact, been the last five years," said Gavin A. Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the NASA group that conducted the analysis. "We’re no longer talking about a situation where global warming is something in the future. It’s here. It’s now."
Over all, 18 of the 19 warmest years have occurred since 2001.
Wenn ich noch einmal jemanden höre, der Sachen sagt wie "Globale Erwärmung? Aber es ist arschkalt draussen, haha", setzt es Ohrfeigen.
2. 😇 switching.social
Nach diversen High-Profile-Datenskandalen bei Facebook et al, die durch die News gingen — und einer größeren Anzahl etwas unauffälligerer Lecks und Fuckups, die von der Presse nicht aufgegriffen wurden — ist mittlerweile klar, dass niemand mehr so achtlos mit ihren/seinen persönlichen Daten umgehen sollte. Weg damit, Zeit für digitale Selbstverteidigung!
Die Frage "Was soll ich dann benutzen?" wird von switching.social zumindest technisch beantwortet: eine umfangreiche Liste von "ethische Alternativen" zu diversen weit verbreiteten Apps.
switching.social is a grassroots website that is trying to let people know about more ethical alternatives to websites and apps that are threatening people’s privacy.

What can an individual do to stop all this? […] By using apps and services that do not steal data, and encouraging others to do the same. That’s what switching.social is for, to make it as easy as possible for people to find ethical alternatives that respect privacy.
Wer nicht komplett von FB oder Twitter lassen kann: manche Apps kann man auch deinstallieren und stattdessen die Website benutzen, die sehr oft nicht von der App zu unterscheiden ist. Ich nutze z.B. Instagram so, und die Frage, ob IG Zugriff auf meine Kontakte oder Location haben darf, stellt sich dadurch erst gar nicht.
3. 🖖 Wie das Verständnis für unterschiedliche Kulturen die Grundlagen der Psychologie erschüttert (Krautreporter)
Bisher sind Forscher davon ausgegangen, dass die Psyche bei allen Menschen gleich funktioniert – also unabhängig davon, wo sie leben. Was auch daran liegt, dass die Psychologie als akademische Fachrichtung in den meisten Fällen aus Europa und Nordamerika stammt. Genau diesen Ansatz stellen manche Forscher seit einiger Zeit infrage. Denn sie glauben, dass die Kultur, in der wir leben, einen wichtigen Einfluss auf unsere Psyche hat. […]
Studien haben gezeigt, dass kulturelle Unterschiede in der Wahrnehmung allgegenwärtig sind – sie beeinflussen unser Gedächtnis, unsere Aufmerksamkeit, unser Denken und die Art und Weise, wie wir reden.
Die erwähnten Studien erinnern mich an die Sapir-Whorf-Hypothese der linguistischen Relativität, die postuliert, dass Sprache das Denken formt (→Wikipedia), scheinen aber haltbarer zu sein. Faszinierend!

Interessanter Artikel darüber, warum im Osten Deutschlands stärker die Nazis gewählt werden als im Westen, und von wem. Keine Ahnung, ob an dieser These etwas dran ist, aber es würde Einiges erklären, und die Geschichte geht mir seit Monaten nicht aus dem Kopf.
Eastern Man, a figure long patronized, pitied or just ignored in the West, is in the process of again reshaping German politics.
No one more embodies the frustrations of eastern men — or has been more the object of their ire — than Ms. Merkel, an eastern woman who rose to the pinnacle of power and provides a daily reminder of their own failure.

5. 🌔 "I took nearly 50,000 images of the night sky to make an 81 Megapixel image of Tuesday's moon" (Reddit)
Ein Amateur-Astro-Fotograf nimmt 50.000 Fotos vom Mond auf und stückelt sie zu einem gigantischen Bild zusammen. Ich bin schwer beeindruckt, wie viele Details man erkennt. Die ganz große Version des Bildes hat 291MB, der Link dazu hat sich schon mehrfach geändert und findet sich in den Kommentaren.
